About DS

In a world where 75% of adolescents own a cell phone* and approximately 21% of teens are accessing the internet from mobile gaming devices and gaming consoles (Xbox, Playstation, Wii)* it can feel like an overwhelming task to remain informed and a step ahead of your children. For many parents, this has lead to a disconnect where they’ve taken somewhat of a “hands off” approach in this area of their children’s lives.

Helping families cross the digital divide, that’s what we do at Digital Shepherds. Through our classes, which are focused on live demonstrations rather than simply information dissemination, we will walk you through setting up yours and/or your children’s computers, mobile phones, gaming devices and internet connections so that you are able to better control the vast sea of information at your children’s fingertips. We literally bring an XBOX360, Playstation3 and Wii and show you, live, how to set up the parental controls! Same thing with your Windows XP/Vista/7 or OSX computers…no more wondering, “did I set this thing up right?” During the course of our instructional time, we will also give you some tools you can use in the form of helpful tips and “best practices” to ensure you are fully equipped to meet the challenges of raising youths who have embraced a digital lifestyle. We at Digital Shepherds are excited to be among your parenting resources for raising children in this digital age and we look forward to walking alongside parents and providing vital instruction in the area of consumer electronics use because we are all, ultimately, Digital Shepherds.

We are also working toward a teaching curriculum in the LAUSD on the benefits and dangers of social media. This curriculum will be presented to students in Fourth and Fifth grades, as well as Middle Schoolers. It is a multimedia presentation which includes lecture combined with creatively produced and directed PSAs and lightly sprinkled with clips from various news stories where children have been victimized through the use of social media to help drive home some of the unfortunate realities of the use of social media. The thrust of this curriculum is to educate and inform youths making them smarter users of web2.0 and communications devices/media.
